Natalia Ariza - gifts from my mother
DESCRIPTION:
I believe that revolution is cultivated through motherhood and the ideals that are chosen to be passed down through generations. I think of the initiative my own mom took to raise me and my sister with a close connection to our Mexican culture and simultaneously breaking toxic cycles of machismo and normalized dynamics of inferiority. She refrained from passing down the idea that a woman must conform to the patriarchy and keep an image of poise, specifically when it comes to marriage and what it means to be a wife in the average latino household. This piece demonstrates the aspects that contribute to the image a woman takes in the family structure, bringing together the lace from a wedding dress, pieces of religious inspiration, and the female body as she breaks through and plants the roots for future women in my family.
